Description
This is Part 3 of the transcription and translation of the MBS FREE STUDIO talk show that was streamed live on YouTube on 17th December. Again, for your information, the cut-and-edited Japan-only version is no longer available officially but I found some pirated copies floating around.
Because of the length of this talk show, and to avoid confusion, I’ve reduced the banter with audience, and some musings or extra chatter they tend to have while looking over the questions.

S: You like movies, do you?

S: Well, then, if you were to name a movie that you like, would you have anything in mind?
T: 好きな映画、マーベル作品はね、ほぼ見てます。
at: A movie I like. When it comes to Marvel productions, I watch almost all of them.

K: It’s been quite a while, but it’s a film called ‘Phone Booth’.

On the Frequency of Ear-Cleaning
S: へ。そうですか。耳かきの頻度を教えてください。
S: Oh, is that so? Tell us how often you clean your ears.
T: あの、僕氷風呂好きなんですよ。
T: Um, I like ice baths, you know.
S: ええ？サウナじゃなくて？
S: What? Not saunas?
T: ま、サウナも好きなんですけど、氷風呂が好きなんですよ。
T: Well, I do like saunas as well, but I do like ice baths.
T: 氷風呂がめっちゃ好きで、もうライブ終わる度に、
T: So I really like ice baths, and after every live show,

T: で、バァって上がってその寒いのが、自分の熱が暖めてくる感じが好きで、
T: And the coldness you feel when you get up, the feeling of your heat warming you up. I like that feeling.
T: その瞬間がめっちゃ好きで、もうそれほぼ毎日するんですけど、
T: I really like that instant, to the point where I do that almost every day.
T: その時に何か綿棒でこうやって、
T: And right then, I kind of use a cotton bud like this,

K: じゃもうほぼ毎回やん。

K: 僕もほぼ毎日やってますね。
K: I also do it almost daily.
S: え。氷風呂入るんですか。
S: Is that so? Do you also soak in ice baths?
K: 入らない、僕は。あの、黒い綿棒あるでしょ？
K: No, I don’t. Um, there are those black cotton buds, right?

K: あれ見ると、やりたくなっちゃうんですよ。今日もやりましたし。
K: When I look at that, I start to want to clean my ears. Today I did too.
S: 今日もやる。やりすぎって炎症起こさないでください。

T: 「サウナ嫌いって言ってたやん」って。

S: でもサウナより氷風呂のほうが好きって事。どちかっていうと。
S: But so it means that you prefer ice baths to saunas. If you had to choose.
T: そうですね。

K: でも少しぐらい入るんですよね。
K: But you do go once in a while, don’t you?
S: 当然冬関係なくですよね。
S: Of course, no matter that it’s winter, right?
T: もう全然なく入る。もう真冬、昨日入りましたし。

Impression of UVERworld
S: これね。「私のUVERworldのイメージは＿＿ですが…ホント？」

K: 聞いてみたい、聞いてみたい。
K: I’d like to hear.
S: 案外そうじゃなさそうな答え今日書いてくると、これ、ね。面白いぞこれ。

T: 全員に行ってるよな。
T: I do it to all the members, isn’t that right?

S: じゃ、メンバー以外にも行く場合あるんですね。
S: Then, are there times where you’d do it to those other than your band mates?
T: あ、行かないですね。
T: Ah, I don’t, actually.
S: （？）とか孝之とかそういう。

T: あ、絶対行かないですね。
T: Ah, I definitely don’t.
S: あ、そうだった。そこはやっぱりまだ扉があるんですね。
S: Oh, that’s how it is. Of course there’s still a barrier in these cases, right?
T: いや、扉って事はないですけど、それがま普通なんですけど、
T: No, it’s not about a barrier. It’s normal to be like that.
T: これがもう普通じゃないですか、こう言う感じが。

T: こっちは何かまた別わけ。

K: 迷惑してんですよ。
K: It’s a bother.
T: 一人でいるより自分出せるチャンネルなんで。
T: Since he’s the channel through which I can express myself more freely than when I’m alone.

K: He’s an annoyance to five people.
S: しょうがないですね。
S: It can’t be helped, right?
T: 今も彼がいひんかったら、こんなに喋れてないです、もう僕。
T: Today as well, if not for his being around, I wouldn’t have spoken so much.

On UVERworld being Shy
S: シャイに見えますが本当ですか。ま、確か見えるちゃ見えるだよね。
S: ‘You look shy but is it true?’ Well, it’s true, when you think about it, you do look it.
T: シャイではないと思うんですけど、
T: I think we’re not shy though.
K: シャイではないな。
K: No, not shy.
T: でもね、やっぱ何万人もよう（？）の人がテレビの前で見るとか思うと、
T: But actually, of course when I think of the fact that a few tens of thousands of people are watching in front of the T.V.,
T: 結構何か、きよっちゃう（方言？）って言うか。
T: I get quite, kind of nervous (I think he uses a dialectic word here) or something.
S: え。きようってどういう意味ですか。緊張じゃないでしょう。
S: What? What do you mean by ‘kiyou’ (the word Takuya used)? It doesn’t mean ‘nervous’, does it?
T: 緊張じゃないですかね。
T: I suppose it is ‘nervous’.
S: 緊張ですか。緊張するんですか。
S: Nervous, is it? Do you get nervous?
T: しますね。
T: I do.
S: 似合わないね。
S: That doesn’t seem to suit you.
K: いや、似合わないですね。
K: No, it doesn’t, right?
S：コンサートは。
S: What about concerts?
T: コンサート全然緊張しないです。
T: I don’t get nervous at all for concerts.
S: コンサートよりもやっぱりそういうほうが。
S: Rather than concerts, at the end of the day, those sorts of things are more…
T: そうですね。何か好きな人の前で自分出すのめっちゃ好きなんですけど、
T: That’s right. It’s kind of like, I like expressing myself in front of people I like, but,
T: 例えばじゃ、
T: well, for instance,
T: その好きな人に恥かかせたくないなって気持ちがめっちゃ強いんですよね。
T: that feeling of not wanting to embarrass those people you like, is extremely strong, you know.
S: あ、なるほど。
S: Ah, I see.
T: だからUVERworldのファンの人たちって、自分の友達にめっちゃ進めるんですよ。
T: Actually, UVERworld’s fans strongly recommend us to their friends.
T: 勧めてくれるんですよ。今日出るから、みたいな。
T: You know, they spread word for us. ‘They’re performing today,’ and so on.
T: そうなってくると、何かね。
T: When it’s become like this, it’s sort of.
S: その人の顔に泥を塗りたくないって。
S: You don’t want to bring shame upon them.
T: そうそう。その人のために向けてやるのは全然余裕なんですけど、
T: That’s it. When I’m facing those people and doing it for them, I’m completely relaxed about it though.
T: だから何かちょっとね、苦手です。
T: That’s why I’m kind of, a bit, bad at it.
S: あ、それ考えすぎちゃうんだね。
S: Ah, you think too much about it, right?
T: もうファンの人達の前でやりたいですね。
T: I actually want to do it in front of fans.
S: 誠実！責任感が凄い。
S: You’re sincere! You have a great sense of responsibility.
S: もうちょっと、それぐらい優しく克哉さんにもやってもらっていいですか。
S: Couldn’t you treat Katsuya-san with a little more kindness, just like that?
K: 是非ね。是非です。
K: Please do, I welcome it.
S: でも、確かに、ちょっとシャイに、特にTAKUYA∞さん何か見えるんだけど、
S: But it’s true that you seem a little shy, especially TAKUYA∞-san, but
S: 勝手な私の憶測ですけど、結構来られても案外受け入れてくれるタイプだけど、
S: this is just my own conjecture, but you’re the kind that unexpectedly can take quite a lot coming to you, but
S: 何か150％ぐらい満たした時に一回キレる見たいな感じありそうな。
S: somehow once it comes to about 150% full, you snap. You give off that sort of feeling.
S: それまでは案外いけん（？）じゃ、「何だ、TAKUYA∞、TAKUYA∞」みたいな。
S: Up until then you’re unexpectedly fine with it. Then you’d be like, ‘What’s wrong? TAKUYA∞, TAKUYA∞.’
S: 全部OK、OKしてくれるのに、二年に一回ぐらい「いや、それは違うですよ」
S: Even though you keep saying you’re OK with it, once every two years, you’d say, ‘Hey look, that’s not right.’
(You’re completely off. He’d just tell you to bugger off right away.)
S: でくるタイプじゃないかなって思ってたんですけど、どうですか。
S: I thought you’d be the sort to be like that, so, what do you think?
K: いや全然でも本当に、このままですよ。
K: No, not at all, but really, he’s just as you see him here.
S: このままですか。へ、素敵だな。
S: Just as I see him? Wow, that’s splendid.
S: ま、「仲良さそうだけど本当？」は本当だな、これは。聞くまでもないな。
S: Well, ‘You seem to be really close but is it true?’ would be true, right? There’s no need to ask.
S: 年を取らなさそうだけどって言うのが、ま、これだけ走ったり、
S: ‘You seem to not age but,’ would be, well, since you run that much and stuff,
S: 食べ物のこと考えってたら、ちょっと分かるね。
S: and you think about your diet, we have an idea of why, right?
On being Disciplined
S: あ、ストイックね、みんな言うってる。
S: Ah. Disciplined1, right? Everyone’s saying it.
S: ストイックそうだけど、本当ですか。これが本当でしょう。
S: You seem to be disciplined, but is it true?
T: ストイックだとあっま思ってもいないって言うか、もうそれがむしろ、
T: I’ve never really thought that we were disciplined, or rather, that’s instead,
T: 例えばじゃ、食事も気にせずに、運動もせずに、
T: let’s say for instance, you don’t take note of your meals, and you don’t exercise either,
T: そうしているとしんどくなっていくじゃないですか、体が？
T: if you do that, it gets tiring, doesn’t it? For your body?
S: うん。
S: Yes.
T: そっちの方がストイックだなと思います、僕は。
T: I think that that’s more disciplined.
S: あ、その状態でやる方が。
S: Ah, more so when doing it in that condition?
T: その状態の方は絶対しんどいですよと思う。
T: It’s definitely more tiring when you’re in that condition, I think.
S: 確かに、確かに。そうですね。克哉さんは。ストイック。
S: That’s true, that’s true. I see. What about you, Katsuya-san? Being disciplined.
S: ストイックなのは本当ですか。ストイックに見えるんですけど。
S: Is it true that you’re disciplined? Well, ykj do look disciplined, though.
K: 全然ですよ。全然ですよ。
K: Not at all. Not at all.
K: ただこう何かやりたい事があるから、それをやるみたいな。
K: It’s just that it’s kind of like, there are things you’d like to do, so you do those things.
K: そのためにこのやりたくないと思う事もやらないといけないです。
K: For the sake of that, I have no choice but to do these things I don’t want to do.
S: ストイックです。要はそれをストイックと思います。
S: That’s disciplined. Basically, I think that’s being disciplined.
K: その先にこれがあるから、これしないといけないって言う鍵（？）をね。
K: Since this thing is beyond that, I have to do this. That’s the key(?) to it.
(Kacchan’s gesturing a lot so let me paraphrase. There’s a hurdle in front of your goal so you have to cross that hurdle to get to it.)
S: あ、TAKUYA∞さん何かは先程歌詞は年がら年中好きでって言ってましたけど、
S: Ah, TAKUYA∞-san said just now that he likes lyrics all year round, but
S: 克哉さんはそういう音楽に対してアプローチはどうなんですか。
S: Katsuya-san, what is your approach towards music?
K: あ、だから流れる音楽メモ取ったり（？）とか、
K: Ah, so I take notes on the music that plays, and so on,
S: 後は色々探したりとか。
S: And you look for all sorts of things later, and such.
K: とか。えーと。ちょっとおやつ見て、このコード後で分析しようとか。
K: And such. Um. I look over it a little during snack time (not sure about this), and stuff like, ‘let me analyse this chord later.’
S: やっぱやっていらっしゃるですね。
S: As expected, you do that, don’t you?
K: そうですね。でこんな曲の方あったらいいなって言うメモはめちゃって、
K: That’s right. Then, I’d insert notes that say, ‘It’d be great if it were in this sort of song’,
K: で曲作る時に、その時の自分の感情で「あ、どれ作ろうかな」みたいな感じ。
K: And when we’re writing songs, I’d go by my own feelings at the time and say, ‘Hm, which should I write, I wonder.’ Something like that.
S: あ、でも本当これだけは言えるけど、乗りだけでやってないバンドです。これが。
S: Ah. But really, I can at least say this. You’re not a band that just goes by feel. Knowing this.
S: いや、本当にロックとか、案外分かんないんですよ、一見（？）。
S: No, well, really, in rock and the like, you unexpectedly can’t tell by one look.
S: だけど、本当に緻密に色々訓練したり、
S: Still, you really go into great detail, and practise various things,
S：色々やっていらっしゃるって言うの分かっります。
S: and do various things. We can tell that you do.

On UVERworld not Going Overseas
T: いや、あのね。一分間の間に、
T: Well, you see. Within the span of a minute,
T: 「UVERworld海外に来ない」って言うのは、3回来てます。
T: ‘UVERworld doesn’t come overseas’ has come thrice.
S: また3回。海外に来ないイメージですが本当ですか。
S: Thrice again. ‘There’s an impression that you don’t come overseas, but is it true?’
T: あ、3回言って、これ5回入ってますね、これ。落ち着け。
T: Ah, I said thrice, but it came five times, this. Calm down.
S: 落ち着け。落ち着けよ。それはお答えします？

T: 本当は2年前から海外行く予定だったんですよ。
T: In truth, we planned to go overseas from two years ago.

S: パンデミックになっちゃって。
S: It became a pandemic.
T: そう。でその時にま何か海外でライブをしたいねんみたいな話をしてて。
T: That’s right. Then, at the time, well, we talked about how we kind of wanted to hold concerts overseas and stuff like that.
S: そうだったんだ。じゃ、本当に行く所だったと。
S: I see, that’s how it was. Then, you’re saying you were really about to go.
T: そうですね。
T: That’s right.
S: じゃ、ちょっとこう、もし、ま、今ね、日本少しずつあれですけど、
S: Then, well, if it gets a little more…currently, Japan is bit by bit getting better, but,
S: 世界まだまだ大変ですし、日本もまたいつかって言うことありますけど、
S: It’s still really difficult around the world as well, and perhaps Japan will someday again too, but,

K: when we did it for outside the country via YouTube, there were a lot of posts from the people overseas, so.
S: 結構ちらほらね、今も。英語じゃない方も結構いらっしゃって。
S: It’s quite sporadic, right? Now as well. There are quite a number of people who are not using English as well.
K: 行きたいですよね。
K: I’d like to go.
S: でもアメリカ何かもそれは勿論。お似合いになるし。
S: But America and the like too, of course. Since it suits you.
T: あ、そうですね。行ってみたいですね。
T: Ah, that’s right. I’d like to try going there.
S: ヨーロッパ何かもね。
S: Europe and stuff as well, right?
T: はい。

S: いや海外とか最高。「台湾！」「韓国！」何かみんな入札してますよ。

K: ね。
K: Right?
S: 「女祭り」だけ凄い来てますよね。

T: あ、ハワイ女祭りしたいですね。
T: Ah, I want to hold Queen’s Party in Hawaii.
K: あ、それ言うてたな。
K: Ah, you did say that.
S: いいですね。「滋賀でやってほしい。」それはやりたいですよね。勿論。
S: That sounds great. ‘I want you to hold one in Shiga.’ You’d like to do that, wouldn’t you? Of course.

S: 50回。（笑）えがたえられるから。(Unsure what this means. And couldn’t catch a whole chunk)
S: 50 times. (Laughs) (I missed a whole chunk here.)

S: 20回まあまあですよ。
S: 20 times is just kind of all right.
T: ピアノが終わるまで、じゃ、20回。
T: Until the piano playing stops. So, 20 times.
K: ああ。いい。ピアノ弾いてもらって。
K: Ahh. That’s nice. You’re playing the piano for us.
S: はい、ます、じゃ。
S: All right, I shall then.
K: ちょ、何で俺に言うてんの？一応勝負やで。
K: Hang on, why are you saying it to me? It’s still a match, you know. (To Takuya.)
S: じゃ、腕立相撲もう省略しようか、じゃ。（笑）
S: In that case, shall we omit the arm push-up wrestling, then? (Laughs)

S: We’ll do it, we’ll do it. Do we do it here?

T: でも何年ぶりやんの？
T: But how many years has it been since we’ve done this?
K: マジで久しぶりやな。
K: It’s really been a long time, hasn’t it?
T: 何年？

K: 何かどっかで飯食って時に、もう多分滋賀県の頃よ。俺TAKUYA∞とやったは。
K: It was when we were kind of eating somewhere, it’s probably when we were in Shiga, you know. When I last did this with TAKUYA∞.
T: 15年ぶりぐらい？
T: About 15 years since that?
K: うん。
K: Yes.
S: ちょっと分かんないですね。
S: It seems like we wouldn’t really be able to tell, right?
T: あ！そう。筋トレしてるやん、だって。
T: Oh, that’s right! You work out, don’t you? I mean.

K: 筋トレしてる時に何か友達の彼女と腕立て負けたら一万やる。
K: when I was working out, we were kind of saying, if I lost to my friend’s girlfriend at push-ups (he means arm wrestling), I’d give them 10 000 yen.

T: で指相撲にする？
T: Then shall we do thumb wrestling?
S: じゃ、指相撲にします？
S: Then, shall we go with thumb wrestling?

K: Let’s do this! (Kacchan makes a certain pose with his hands.)
S: いっせーのせ？
S: ‘Isse-no-se’5?
K: これ。

T: ああああ。もうそれやったら俺もう苦手やな。もういいや。
T: Ohhh. No if we do this I’m actually bad at it. Oh well, it’s fine.
K: よし！よし、よし！いっせーのでな。どうぞ、もう、じゃ。
K: Yes! Let’s go! Let’s go with ‘Isse-no-se’, all right? Go ahead, then, why don’t you?
T: 俺から？
T: Starting from me?
K: うん。
K: Yes.
(They start the game. It’s with fingers so maybe just dialogue isn’t the best way to convey this. I’ll narrate the game state and their actions accordingly.)
T: せーの、一。
T: Ready, get set, one.
(There are no thumbs up. Takuya said the wrong number and lost a round.)
T: No! No! No, no! こうせえや！(Yes, he said it in English.)
T: No! No! No, no! You should do this! (Takuya lifts his thumb, asking Kacchan to do so.)
K: せーの、二。
K: Ready, get set, two. (Kacchan has one thumb up. He lost.)
T: せーの、二。Yes!
T: Ready, get set, two. Yes! (Takuya has two thumbs up. He won, and lost a hand.)
K: せーの、三。
K: Ready, get set, three. (Kacchan has two thumbs up. He lost.)
T: せーの、一。
T: Ready, get set, one. (Takuya and Kacchan each have a thumb up. Takuya lost.)
K: せーの、二。
K: Ready, get set, two. (Kacchan has a thumb up. He lost.)
T: せーの、一。Yes!
T: Ready, get set, one. Yes! (Takuya has a thumb up. He won the game.)
S: やっぱり負ける。
S: Sure enough, you’ve lost.
K: 結局負けんのか。
K: You’re telling me, in the end, I still lost?
S: ストレート負けじゃないですか。
S: Weren’t they straight losses?
T: どうぞ、じゃ。腕立てどうぞ。
T: Go on, then. Please do the push-ups.
K: 20秒…20秒ぐらい？20秒じゃないか。俺やってる間だけ。
K: 20 seconds…around 20 seconds? Oh, it’s not 20 seconds, is it? Just while I’m doing them.
S: はい。
S: Yes.
K: あの、ちょっと頑張れる感じのやつ。はい。
K: Um, the sort of stuff that would spur me on. Yes.
S: 分かりました。分かりました。ちょっと恥ずかしい感じのやつやりますね。
S: I’ve got it. I’ve got it. I’ll do something that’s slightly embarrassing, all right?
K: いやいやいや。

S: じゃ、行きましょうか。ちょっとロックな感じで。
S: Then, shall we start? Going with a slightly rock kind of feeling.
(Kacchan does his 20 push-ups as forfeit while Kiyozuka-san plays the piano. I believe he’s improvising. Takuya comes along and starts counting the number of push-ups while watching Kacchan’s form.)
S: いや、あの上から見てて凄い恥ずかしいよね。
S: I say. Looking at it from above, it’s really embarrassing, isn’t it?
S: またとない恥ずかしい絵でした。
S: It’s an embarrassing footage that’s unmatched.
K: 人前で腕立てやんの初めてですよ。
K: It’s the first time I’ve done push-ups in front of people, you know.
S: ちゃんと負荷も掛けてね。いいことに。
S: Done properly with weights even, right? Taking advantage of the situation. (Takuya started pressing on Kacchan halfway through, but I think he was keeping his form rather than adding weights.)
T: あ、でもきれいな、姿勢が。
T: Ah, but he had beautiful form.
K: あ、良かった、良かった。良かったです。
K: Oh, that’s great. It’s great.
S: 良かったですね。
S: That’s great, isn’t it?
K: うん。ありがとうございます。

It means being self-disciplined and strict on oneself, and I think to some extent living a hard life. Also, it seems to have a positive connotation, and many seem to admire those who live such a lifestyle. ‘Acchi-muite-hoi!’, meaning ‘Look there!’. This is another children’s game. I don’t think there is an equivalent in the English-speaking world, and I’ve only come across this as a Taiwanese game called ‘黑白猜 男生女生配’. Essentially, the winner of Janken points in one of four directions, and the loser has to look in one of these four directions. If both the directions match, the loser of Janken finally loses. ↩
